When life gets complicated, it's the most delightful experience to step back in time and experience life as it once was lived in the old villages of Europe. Colmar is one such village, with a truly storybook streetscape. Located in Alsace, in Northeastern France, along the Alsatian Wine Route, this Medieval-era town will make you forget your contemporary cares.
Sometimes referred to as "little Venice" due to its canals, Colmar has plenty of charming streets and squares where you can relax, especially in summer. Have a glass of local wine at one of the sidewalk cafes, browse the unique shopfronts and sample Alsatian delicacies such as heart shaped pretzels and gingerbread (astonishingly, it pairs very well with foie gras!), and don't forget to admire the flowers blooming vibrantly in window boxes and along the canals.
This extremely well-preserved and vibrant village has numerous museums and architectural landmarks that make a leisurely and romantic walking tour a must.
